As you all know, over the past weeks we have been holding a clothing drive and I am proud to say that we went above and beyond and it was a great success. On Sunday after service, we dropped of 16 bags of clothing. Thanks go out to all families who donated and also the people who helped with folding and dropping of the clothes.

Since Jerril has retired, now I have the honors sending you these long, drowsy, yet informative emails. Here are a couple of announcements

Volume Number 13 for our Seraphim Youth Publication has been released and you can download it from the youth website and also the Seraphim Website.

So as everyone is aware, this Friday, we will host an Christmas workshop for the youth. The time-frame will be from 6:30 to 9:00 at night. We need to confirm RSVP as well as confirm the activity you would like to be involved in so we ask all attending that they go here and fill out the form (You must fill out one per person).

In addition, this Sunday is Christmas with service starting at 5am.

Song Book (English Ed) is posted on the website though you can access it here . 12 songs, 5 pages. Requesting people to come out and sing or at least lip sing! This weekend is the last sprint and the covered area is the remainder of the Northeast and then the suburbs, so come along and let make it memorable.

English Qurbana Service - Bible Study: Sunday, December 18, 2011
This Sunday will be English Holy Qurbana Service, and there will be a bible study for the youth after the service focusing on the second chapter of the Gospel John. We ask that you bring a bible (physical/digital) as well as perhaps a notepad and a writing utensil.

Holiday Workshop: Friday, December 23, 2011 [6:30pm - 8:45pm]
This was discussed in the youth meeting held this previous Sunday, as we approach Christmas, we need to band together and hang out as the family we are. Some suggestions for the event were Movie Watching, Gingerbread House Competition, Xbox, 30 Minute Reflection, Christmas Songs, Cooking Something.

Ecumenical Event: Saturday, December 10, 2011 @ George Washington High School

[Forwarded Message] Since a lot of our church members are busy with candle procession, cultural program etc for the EFIC Christmas program, those who does not participate in these items, kindly come and participate in St. Peters JSO Church's part of the procession. Please arrive at George Washington High School Atrium at 2:30 pm on December 10th. We need 2 persons to hold the banner and many to participate in the procession. Please see below the dress code.
Male :- Children and Adults - Black Suit, White Shirt and Red Tie.
Female :-Children up to 10 years - Red Frock.
Female (Teenage and Youth) 10 - 30 years :-
- Red or Green Churidar / Lahanga or Skirt and Blouse or Davani or saree

Well, not much to say on it but I suppose good luck to the performers for skit/dance.

On a final note, the christmas decor should be up before Holy Qurbana this Sunday, so look forward to it appearance though you may preview it if you come to caroling meet-up on Friday night.

Random Facts: By stats I have sent 65 messages from my personal account in these last two years and if you include the 21 from the youth account, and I suppose it scary since the third highest is 28 though I suppose it lower than I originally thought. (Notice: Google recorded this, not me)

Clothing Drive & Youth Retreat

For the next couple of weeks we will will be hosting a clothing drive at the church in which we will donate to Planet Aid. Planet Aid help with a variety of programs for disadvantaged people around the world. Planet Aid accepts gently used, unsoiled, and functional clothing and shoes donations. Please wash and fold the clothes before you donate it. Attached is the S.P.Y.C clothing drive flyer.

In addition, tomorrow MGSOSA is hosting youth retreat at St. George's Syrian Orthodox Church. The second flyer has all of the details.

Thanksgiving, A Little Prayer, & The Final Poll

Tommorrow we will start the preperations for 5th Annual Thanksgiving lunch. I suppose we will start at 9:30 and continue until we're done. Well, if guys can come help out, that be great, even if it for an hour. Let make this event a success.

In addition, there will be a prayer meeting tomorrow at the church starting at 6:00pm but considering how we all are there, I suppose we be there for it.

Woodhaven Cultural Show

As everyone is aware, or should be, tommorrow is the Woodhaven Cultural Show so if you're not attending the youth retreat, we ask that you come help out. If you are performing I ask that you definitely arrive before 11am (No Indian Time conversion please) Directions shouldn't be needed since we were there two weeks ago but if you need ask your parents. Below has details for performers in case you didn't get it, compeliments to Mayble.

Also so I don't get accused of not reminding you guys, tommorrow is two-day perunal so there will be evening service tomorrow night at the church and there will be a three altar qurbana service on Sunday with some new altar boys entering I believe.

Woodhaven Cultural Show: Saturday Nov 5th

Hello Guys,

Please get to the auditorium after 9am. The place will be open then if you guys want to setup and practice early. At 10 am, Annmarie will be going over what you guys need to do for fashion show. If you are unclear on what you are wearing for that email me or Annmarie back asap. Check facebook (I hear she sent messages out). Also please invite your family and friends for support. We want this event to be a huge success and our audience to really enjoy the show we are putting on for them. Thanks and good luck everyone.

Everyone on the list is confirmed to perform. Hope the order of performances is ok with everyone. I feel we still need like another 15 minutes of performances. Anyone that can still perform something additional, please let me know.

Can Drive: All October. Helping Philabundance! Donate non-expired, non-perishable, or boxed items that are listed in the attached flyer. Please bring canned foods or you can donate money to buy the cans. A box will be placed in the church building. Please drop your canned foods there. This drive will be ending soon so it requested everyone help out.
Family Night: As of now, I have posted videos of all performance on the the youth website under the video page or you can access the playlist on the following website http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL13D9A0A16C619125&feature=edit_ok. I have yet to post any photos regarding this event.
General Youth Meeting: Sunday, October 30, 2011. This meeting will focus on nominations for the 2012 E-Board. Since the first Sunday of November is Parumala Perunnal, it was decided to pull back one Sunday for the meeting.
Toy Drive: All November. Details will be provided at a later date.
Woodhaven Cultural Show: Saturday, November 5, 2011 from 11:00 to 13:00. This event is where we show our gratitude to the Woodhaven Center for granting us usage of their auditorium every year. We hope everyone can do some sort of performance on this day, it can be a song, dance, instrumental or skit. There will be sign-up sheets in both the church and church building. Everyone did an awesome job today both with the Family Night program as well as the Youth Building fundraiser.
Team SPYC, performed their own rendition of Idea Star Singer called Idea Star Singer Season SPYC. Thank you to all the performers and dubbing artists.
Juff, Jees, Tina, Jafin, Mayble, Reeba, Steve, Jerril, Savannah, Jingle, Shirley Aunty, Neethu, Siju Uncle, and our on stage audience. Great job you guys!

As a team, we pulled of another amazing job on raising more than we expected for our Building Fundraiser. Thank you to all our helpers and bakers.
Johnson Uncle, Jees, Gabyo, Prabha, Jingle, Bobby, Jordanis, Salem, Steve, Lijo, Toby, Basil T, Jordanis, Tina. Thank you for a great team effort.

Announcements
- We have two months until the end of this year and we have a can drive currently taking place for cans and non-perishable foods, please drop off the goods in the box set up at church or you can give money to buy the cans. We are ending the drive on Oct 30, 2011, please support the local shelters by dropping off the cans and non perishable foods.

- Also, if you committed to bring in money for the youth building fund, please hand it to Juff by next Sunday or ASAP.

- On November 5th, we will have a special Cultural show exclusively for the Woodhaven Center residents. We want to show our appreciation for the center's generosity each year to host our Church Family Night in their auditorium. The sign up sheets will be on the bulletin boards in the church and building. We encourage you to sign up.

Construction Lighting Project: Open To All Youth

Hello Everyone

This is a request from the construction crew and the building committee to the youth of the church, if you have any input regarding this, please reply to Jees, Juff, or myself. Below is a copy of the request in their words. I wasn't given a deadline but I suppose they would want a possible solution as soon as possible.

We like to ask all the young congregation members who are tech-savy to look up LED lights configuration for your church's electronics lighted cross that can be programed to flashes and 'run' using computer as the modulator. It would be a great contribution project from the children (something that they can be proud of working side by side with the adults to achieve a unified project).

I believe that there are special circuit boards that individual LED lights can be inserted individually to form pictures, and then the computer can be programmed to turn on those LED in accordance to the position (x,y) on said circuit boards. There must be some computer programmer in your congregation. Ask university professors in charge of electronic labs for ideas and maybe receive extra credits for design and build project, or for info to the manufacturing companies of the aver mentioned circuit boards and LED lights.

Add On From Juff: There is no blinking cross...or flashing cross...or any other kind of animated cross...that was just building guy getting excited...

The jist of the request, is that we're going to put colored spot lights near small pedistles that form the border. The idea is that these "floodlights" will shine on the new construction and crosses, at night. If we put some thought into it, instead of making this a plain white light, we can try to do something so that we can change colors with seasons or occasions.

Prayer Meeting August 16, 2011

Hi Guys,
This month's prayer meeting will be held shortly after church this Sunday in our church. In our previous youth meeting, we came to an agreement that we would focus on the Gospel of John for our discussions. This Sunday, please be prepared to learn and discuss about John Chapter 1. Please bring your bibles and something to write on as well. Read John Chapter 1 at least 2 times before next Sunday. And also be prepared to stay at least 30-45 minutes after service.

A prayer meeting has been scheduled for this Sunday, July 17th shortly after Qurbana and Achan's sendoff ceremony. Dn. Shiryl will be the speaker and the assigned portion of the bible study is the gospel message of the 5th Sunday after Pentecost St. Luke 9:10-17. Please read this portion at least twice before you attend the prayer meeting.

Church Picnic 7/9/2011 (Saturday)

Hi everyone,

At this point, you should all know that our annual church picnic is this Saturday @ 9AM, Core Creek Park. This year Lijo and myself have been selected as the picnic coordinators. We've realized quite fast that organizing and getting through the day of the picnic is no small task. In essense, we need everyone's help to make the day a success. I hope that everyone can make it to this year's picnic, and lend a helping hand. There's going to be plenty of food and we're going to try to pull of some new games and activities.

I've attached the flyer, if anyone wants the directions and map that was discussed this past week at church. You can contact either me or Lijo, if you have any questions or concerns.

And always remember, follow the red balloons, if you get lost :)

Announcements & Questions To The Youth

Yo Everyone

A couple of announcements from the last youth meeting that was two weeks ago. Sorry for sending out so late.

So first announcement is that the hoodie design has been decided to be Option 2 for both the front and the back (for those that don't recall, it the one with the shooting crosses on the front and on the back, text describing SPYC and the main color of the hoodie will be blue. After going over the design with the hoodie committee, I forward the final draft to everyone.

We have English Qurbana Service this upcoming Sunday, June 19th, 2011. On a side note, there is a mandatory General Body Meeting in regards to the construction project, and it Fathers' Day, so be sure to give thanks to your fathers.

VBS will be from Thursday, June 30, 2011 to Saturday, July 2, 2011, so if you are free from obligations, do help out.

So the church asked if the SPYC could perform a skit for the church on Saturday, July 2nd, 2011 (Pernunal Evening). The question is if the youth is willing, so I'm going to do a survey question your opinion. If you are willing to devote, please your name on the following website.

For the 2011 Graduates of High School, Undergraduate or Graduate, please be sure to give your name to church Secretary Sabu Jacob by Sunday June 26, 2011 so that church may commemorate your graduation and present you a bouquet on Sunday, July 3rd, 2011.

On Saturday, July 9th, 2011, our church will host it annual church picnic, it pretty much the same place as last year so there shouldn't be much trouble getting there and all.

And I was going to mention Family Conference but since Chemachan and Juff send info on the subject, well I suppose I'll say it strongly encouraged to attend.

So the submission deadline for Seraphim Volume 13 is July 30, 2011. It is strongly encouraged for all youth to submit something.

Dear team,

Registration at our church is really low. I believe many of you had an opportunity to attend the Jubilee convention last year. Please make an effort to attend. I'm organizing the youth program and we have a really good team together and have a good program together. Registration will be super easy and for those who went to this retreat center a couple years back, I can assure that everyone was pleasantly satisfied.

So to insure everyone is aware, the Woodhaven Cultural Show is on hold for the most part. We tried to reschedule to this week but they're busy with some stuff this weekend so we talk about a future date on the upcoming youth meeting.

If you haven't already done the survey, please remember to fill out the survey for the hoodie designs by 12:00pm EST this Saturday (No particulars about time but I need to print this out prior to church). I'll go over the results at the youth meeting this upcoming Sunday. Hello, Everyone!

Just a couple of announcements that needs to forwarded out.

The first announcement is regarding the design for the youth hoodies. Please fill the survey on the following site https://sites.google.com/site/phillyspyc/designs in regards to which design you like to see on the hoodie, the designs are at the bottom and we will display the results at the June Youth Meeting, which should be on Sunday, June 5th, 2011. The color will be ultimately decided at the meeting and the designs are posted at the bottom of the page.

The second announcement is that the Social Day pictures are posted on the youth gallery which is located on http://phillyspycgallery.blogspot.com/.

The third announcement is that it was decided to postpone the Woodhaven Cultural Show from Saturday, May 28th, 2011 to an indefinte date as of right now.

Fourth, as everyone is probably aware, on Monday May 23, 2011, George Kuriakose uncle, a member of our church, died. The viewing will be this Friday, May, 27, 2011 starting at 6pm and on Saturday, May 28, 2011, we will have Holy Qurbana in the morning and proceed with burial afterwards.

May Youth Meeting Minutes

So here are some news updates from the last youth meeting held on Sunday, May 8th, 2011.

On Sunday, May 15, 2011 we will have English Holy Qurbana Service. In addition, we may have a small bible study after the service.
In the last youth meeting, it was decided to postpone the hoodie design submission deadline to Sunday, May 22, 2011. All submissions are to be forwarded to Secretary Jerril George. Afterwards from Monday, May 23, 2011 to Saturday, June 4, 2011, we will host an online poll to determine which design and color shall be utilized, details will be provided as the time of the event nears.
On Saturday, May 21, 2011, the church will be hosting their annual Spring cleaning. "I encourage your participation as this is a good opportunity to give back some "youth energy" to our church." Johnson Uncle.
On Saturday, May 28, 2011 from 6:30pm to 9:00pm we will host a cultural show at the Woodhaven Center for the people there in gratitude for all the years they have open their auditorium to us on Family Night. This event is considered as community service event and it is asked that everyone come to help host this program. If you are willing to perform a program, please inform someone within the E-Board ASAP.
The late registration deadline for the Family Conference is scheduled to be Tuesday, May 31, 2011, so if you planning to go to the Family Conference this year, make sure you registered before then.
VBS will be held from Thursday, June 30, 2011 to Saturday, July 2, 2011. If you got the time, be sure to register as a volunteer, or if that too much for you, try to reel outside students for the event.
And since it less than two months away, the annual church picnic is scheduled to be Saturday, July 9th, 2011.

Yo, here are some quick announcements from the youth meeting held last Sunday.

This Saturday, April 9th, 2011, we will be hosting a youth prayer meeting at the church, we plan on making like the Lenten Retreat that was hosted at our church last year. We request that all youth attend and there will be free food. Please bring your own bible, notepad, pencil/pen, and if you possess one, your Holy Week service book. We looking for maximum participation from the youth

The MGSOSA Lenten retreat is going to be held on Saturday, April 16th, 2011 at Baltimore, MD. If you want to come, please let me know before this Sunday so we can provide a headcount and if need, transportation.

LENTEN RETREAT

Hi Everyone,

The Lenten Retreat/Prayer that was scheduled to occur at St.Peter's Church on April 2nd, has been postponed to a later date due to a scheduling conflict with St.Paul's Church Youth Retreat, which is happening on the same day. Please note that the prayer has been rescheduled to April 9th, Saturday from 10 am. to 1 pm. We hope to see you all there! We recommend that you bring your Bibles and notebooks with you!

In the meantime, we strongly encourage you to attend the St.Paul's Youth Retreat on April 2nd, which will occur from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. This is a great opportunity to gather with our brothers and sisters in Christ and pray together as one unit under the one Shepherd. If anyone needs a ride, let us know, because we are ready to pick you up!

Also, there will be a youth meeting this upcoming Sunday after Holy Qurbana.

In addition, please note that the deadline for the MGSOSA 2011 Mission Trip Application is April 1st. If you are interested, please apply as soon as possible at malankara.com or the MGSOSA Facebook page.

Weekend Announcements (Updated 3/19/11)

So there have been a couple of updates to tomorrow schedule though, do you guys prefer this brief style or my paragraph style?

First, we going to have to cancel English service for this month but we will definitely have one prior to Holy Week.

Second, in regards to the youth prayer meeting, it is suggest to bring a bible (and for confirmation purposes, your holy week book), the speaker will be Jingle and the session shouldn't last long.

Third, there is a regular prayer meeting tonight at Jees Varghese's house.

Fourth, Our Beloved Arch Bishop Mor Theethose Thirumeni, is visiting our church tomorrow to celebrate Holy Mass.

Some quick notifications:

First, this Saturday, March 19th, 2011, there will be a prayer meeting at 6:00pm at our Vice President's Jee Varghese's house.

Second, this Sunday, March 20th, 2011, we will have English Qurbana Service.

Third, we will have a small youth prayer meeting after the English service, all youth are requested to attend (On a side note, we trying to confirm how many youth have books for Holy Week Service, so if you have one, could you bring it this Sunday).

Fourth, the deadline for youth dues and hoodie (given at a later time) is this Sunday, please insure you receive a receipt from Treasurer Juff George.

World Prayer Day & Daylight Savings

Just a reminder, tomorrow is the World Prayer Day event, which is hosted at St. Thomas Indian Orthodox Church (1009 Unruh Ave, Philadelphia, PA, 19111) from 9:30am - 12:30pm. This event is considered a pretty good event, and it an ecumenical event so come out if you are free and all.

As everyone is aware, today is the start of the Great Lent and with fasting, we are also expected to do praying. During Lent, there are some added prayers that should be recited on certain days of Lent. Anyway after consulting the Internet and Achan, we got a .pdf detailing the prayers used during Lent season. Within the .pdf it should be stated if a prayer portion is specific to a certain day, so take care to recite the prayer only on that specific day.

And, just a reminder:The Great Lent will begin this Monday, March 7th. (This should give you all ample time to eat the last of your triple-meat combo pizza from Sam's Club, aisle 7?...) As this is the most important fasting season of our basic Syrian Orthodox faith, the youth are strongly recommended to join the fasting and praying.

"I wish I could live here permanently". These were the words of Moran Mor Ignatius Elias III, Patriarch of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church, when he reached St. Stephen's church Manjanikkara at the last leg of his sojourn in Malankara. Here is a firsthand account of the last days of the Patriarch, Moran Mor Elias III. The writer of this article had the privilege of being an eyewitness to the grand reception accorded to the Bava Thirumeni and the subsequent happenings at Manjanikkara.

It was Lord Irvin, the British Viceroy in India who invited the Patriarch of Antioch and all the East, H.H. Elias III to India. The viceroy was wonderstruck when he heard that there was an ancient Christian Church in the southern most part of India, which was as old as Christianity itself. St. Thomas, one of the disciples of Jesus Christ reached India in AD 52. He preached the Holy Gospel in Kerala and converted some Brahmin families to Christianity. He constructed seven and a half Churches in Kerala and ordained priests. Thus, a Christian Church came into existence in Kerala from the time of St. Thomas. The Jacobite Syrian Church, which was a part of this ancient Church, was facing disharmony and disunity from the beginning of the twentieth century, caused by group rivalries and infighting. The viceroy felt pain at this. He wanted this Church to prevail and prosper. Therefore, he invited the Head of the Church, the Patriarch of Antioch, and all the East, H.H. Elias III to come to India to bring peace among the warring groups. Though H.H. was not healthy enough to take a tedious journey and though the doctors advised him not to travel, the Patriarch decided to go to India, because for him peace in the Church was more important. He reached Kerala, visited many churches, and had discussions with the Metropolitans of the opposite faction. He had prolonged talks with Vattasseril Mar Dionysius. Though the Patriarch made many concessions, Mar Dionysius was stubborn in his demands and peace efforts failed. The Patriarch was very much disappointed. He was so sad that he decided to return without achieving his goal.

It was about this time that Fr. Kuriakose Elavimamannil, Vicar; St. Stephen's Church Manjanikkara invited the Patriarch to his Church. The immediate response of the Patriarch was a question. "Do you want my skeleton in your church?" This was really a prophesy which came true after he reached the church. Now some thing about this church. This church at Manjanikkara, named after St. Stephen, was founded by Elavainamannil Skaria Malpan, the father of Fr. Kuriakose. He was a Malpan or teacher at the 'Pazhya' (Old) Seminary teaching deacons, Syriac and the rites and conduct of Holy Qurbono. Vattsseril Mae Dionysius was his colleague at the Pazhaya Seminary. When Mar Dionysius questioned the authority of the Patriarch and established his own faction, Fr. Skaraia Malpan who was a staunch supporter of the Patriarch left Pazhya Seminary and returned to Omallur. However, the condition in churches south of Kottayam was not at all favourable to the Patriarch side. Most of the churches here were with Mar Dionysius. Entry of new priests in the existing churches was not allowed. Therefore, Skaria Malpan wanted to have a church of his own for his son Fr. Kuriakose and the believers. He constructed a small church in his own land in Manjanikkara. It was on a lonely hill, no road to reach there, no availability of water. He hoped all facilities would be there soon. There were only 28 poor peasant families as members of the church. It was in the midst of Church's enemies. Fr. Kuriakose hoped a visit of the Patriarch would be a boost to the Church and be helpful for its continued existence here.

H.H. The Patriarch agreed to visit the Church. The Vicar now began to face challenges; no road to the Church, no rooms for the Patriarch, Metropolitans, priest and other invitees to live in. Water was not available on the hill. It was a steep hill, no place for the devotees to stand. He could not collect funds for these from the poor parishioners. Fr. Kuriakose took the challenges boldly. First a new road, 4 km. in length was constructed. People of the locality gave land for the road and church members volunteered the construction work. Hilltop around the church was leveled so that thousands of people could stand there, temporary sheds were constructed, many wells were dug, and water was made available; everything was ready within a short time.

A grand reception was accorded to the Patriarch befitting his dignity and majesty. The journey was tedious, but once he reached the church the cool breeze that blew incessantly on the hilltop, the beautiful scenery around, the green valleys and fields, the serene atmosphere, tranquility – all attracted him very much. He was very happy and pleased. He told the Metropolitans who were near him that he liked the place very much and that he wanted to stay here permanently. Hearing this, Fr. Kuriakose, the vicar told him that he and his parishioners were very happy to have him here permanently. However, he was sad that the Church was very small and facilities very meager. To this, St. Elias replied, "This small church will become famous all over Malankara and abroad. You will see it". His prophesy has come true. The church became famous. The Holy sepulcher, Mar Ignatius Dayro and church, all attract people from all over India. It has become a great pilgrim centre. There were many other occasions when he prophesied that the end of his journey was here in Manjanikkara and that his body will be buried here. Ordinarily when the Patriarch visits a church, he will give a piece of the holy relics of saints or holy people to the church to keep it there or ordain the Vicar, a Corepiscopo. At Manjanikkara a Metropolitan who came along with him asked him what present should be given to Fr. Kuriakose, the Vicar. To this, St. Elias replied, "Next Sunday, i.e. Feb 13 after the Holy Qurbono relics of a Church father will be buried in this church and the vicar will be ordained Corepiscopo. To the surprise of all who heard this, the dead body of the saint who prophesied this, was buried in the church at the exact time on the exact date – Feb 13.

It was a usual practice for Bava Thirumeni to walk around the church after dinner for some time. The Metropolitans and priests will follow him then. On 12^th Friday, after dinner, he walked around the Church as usual. He sang a hymn in Syriac and asked those who followed him to repeat it. This was a song to be sung at the time of burial of the heads of the Church. He also taught them the rites to be followed then. Thus, he taught them how to conduct the solemn burial of a Patriarch – the last journey of the head of the Church rehearsed the night before his death. It was a prophesy!

To turn the prophesy true the holy body of Moran Mor Elias III, the Patriarch of Antioch and all the East was buried near St. Stephen's church Manjanikkara on Sunday Feb 13 after the Holy Qurbono. This place was the private property of Fr. Kuriakose Elavinamannil and his brothers. Fr. Kuriakose thus had the unique privilege of burying the holy body of a Patriarch, the head of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church in his own land. I believe nobody else in the world had such a blessing. Later Fr. Kuriakose gave 30 cents of land, on which the holy sepulcher stood, to the Holy Patriarchate as a gift. The St. Ignatius church, the Dayro are all here, in this land given free by him.

H.H. Moran Mor Elias III was a holy man, a saint in every sense. From the very beginning, miracles happen at this sepulcher. It continues. Pilgrims come here from the different parts of Manjanikkara and get blessings. To attend the perunnal on Feb 13, thousands of pilgrims go to the Holy Qabar, walking a great distance. I think Manjanikkara is the only pilgrim centre in the whole world where pilgrims walk some 200 to 300 km to reach the church.

The 30^th day of demise of Bava Thirumeni (adiyanthiram) was observed on a very grand scale. On that auspicious day, there happened a miracle. As thousands of pilgrims were expected to attend the function, a very big feast was being prepared. In the early hours of the day, the cooks complained to Fr. Kuriakose that there was shortage of coconut oil to make 'pappadams'. It was not possible to have a fresh supply of oil at that hour. To this the Vicar said, "Don't worry; this is Bava Thirumeni's adiyanthiram. He will provide you with necessary things, please carry on the work". The cooks started the work. To the surprise of all, oil began to boil in the vessel and overflow. The overflowing oil was collected in a vessel. This phenomenon continued for some time and oil was collected in many vessels. The devotees thronged around the vessels and took this wonderful oil home in bottles. The miracles at the sepulcher continue…

Memorial of St. Stephen (January 8th)

Hello Everyone,

On January 8th, the Orthodox church remembers St. Stephens, the first Christian who stood for his beliefs against the political oppression and became the first martyr for Christianity.

According to the Acts of the Apostles Stephen was tried by the Sanhedrin (Supreme Court) for blasphemy against Moses and God (Acts 6:11) and speaking against the Temple and the Law (Acts 6:13-14). He was stoned to death (c. A.D. 34–35) by an infuriated mob encouraged by Saul of Tarsus, the future Saint Paul: "And Saul entirely approved of putting him to death" (Acts 8:1). Stephen's final speech was presented as accusing the Jews of persecuting prophets who spoke out against their sins: '"Which one of the Prophets did your fathers not persecute, and they killed the ones who prophesied the coming of the Just One, of whom now, too, you have become betrayers and murderers." (Acts 7:52) Saint Stephen's name is simply derived from the Greek Stephanos, meaning "crown". Traditionally, Saint Stephen is invested with a crown of martyrdom for Christianity

St. Stephen was a Jew living in the Hellenic provinces, related to the Apostle Paul and one of the first seven deacons ordained by the Apostles to serve the Church in Jerusalem (thus making him an archdeacon). In the words of Asterias: St Stephen was "the starting point of the martyrs, the instructor of suffering for Christ, the foundation of righteous confession, since Stephen was the first to shed his blood for the Gospel." The Holy Spirit worked powerfully through his faith, enabling him to perform many miracles and always defeat the Jews who would dispute with him. The Jews in their hatred of St. Stephen lied about him to the people, but St. Stephen with his face illumined reminded the people of the miracles God had worked through him and even rebuked the Jews for killing the innocent Christ.

The people were enraged by what they thought was blasphemy and 'gnashed their teeth' at Stephen. It was then that he saw his Christ in the heavens and declared it so. Hearing this, the Jews took him outside the city and stoned him to death, with his kinsman Saul (later St. Paul) holding their coats while they did it. Afar off on a hill was the Virgin Mary and St. John the Theologian who witnessed this first martyrdom for the Son of God and prayed for him while he was being stoned. This occurred about a year after the first Pentecost.

Death of St. John the Baptist (January 7th)

In the Orthodox Church, it is customary, on the day following the Great Feasts of the Lord and the Mother of God, to remember those saints who participated directly in the sacred event. So, on the day following the Baptism of the Lord, the Church honors the one who participated directly in the Baptism of Christ, placing his own hand upon the head of the Savior.

St John, the holy Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord, whom the Lord called the greatest of the prophets, concludes the history of the Old Testament and opens the era of the New Testament. The holy Prophet John bore witness to the Only-Begotten Son of God, incarnate in the flesh. St John was accounted worthy to baptize Him in the waters of the Jordan, and he was a witness of the Theophany of the Most Holy Trinity on the day of the Savior's Baptism.

The holy Prophet John was related to the Lord on His mother's side, the son of the Priest Zachariah and Righteous Elizabeth. The holy Forerunner, John, was born six months before Christ. The Archangel Gabriel announced his birth in the Temple at Jerusalem, revealing to Zachariah that a son was to be born to him. Through the prayers offered beforehand, the child was filled with the Holy Spirit. St John prepared himself in the wilds of the desert for his great service by a strict life, by fasting, prayer, and sympathy for the fate of God's people.

At the age of thirty, he came forth preaching repentance. He appeared on the banks of the Jordan, to prepare the people by his preaching to accept the Savior of the world. In church hymnology, St John is called a "bright morning star," whose gleaming outshone the brilliance of all the other stars, announcing the coming dawn of the day of grace, illumined with the light of the spiritual Sun, our Lord Jesus Christ. Having baptized the sinless Lamb of God, St John soon died a martyr's death, beheaded by the sword on orders of King Herod at the request of his daughter Salome. Baptism of Jesus Christ: January 6

Hello Everyone,

Epiphany commemorating the baptism of our Lord, Jesus Christ is commemorated on January 6th. The Feast of Epiphany originated in the Eastern Churches around the third century. It is celebrated on January 6. The feast is called in Syriac "denho", or 'manifestation'. In the East, it has always been associated in honor of the Baptism of Christ, and its liturgy focused around the blessing of the baptismal water and baptizing the Holy Cross. By the fourth century, the Feast of Epiphany ranked with Easter and Pentecost as one of the three principal festivals of the Church.

Church Caroling: Friday December 17, 2010 & Saturday December 18, 2010

Yo Everyone,

This Friday, December 17, 2010 and this Saturday, December 18, 2010 we as the youth will be joining the adults in our church's Christmas Caroling "parade" as we did last Friday and Saturday. On a side note, I thank everyone who did come out last Friday and Saturday for caroling.

For Friday, we will be around the NE Philadelphia area all day, and it is asked that all coming out come to the church prior to 5:30pm and well if you want to meet up with us later, since all the houses are in the church's radius, come out with your family.

For Saturday, the plan is to wrap up NE Philadelphia, and then head north to the suburb areas like Bensalem, Churchville, etc, and finish up in New Jersey and it is asked that all attending, arrive at the church prior to 2:00pm.

Generally we be singing these 4 songs: "Angels We Have Heard on High", "Deck the Halls", "Jingle Bells", and "Joy to the World".

I hope everyone can come out and have fun and on a side note, please dress warmly.

Advent Lent (December 15 - 25)

The period of Advent in the church is a time to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Advent/Christmas Fast takes place from the December 15 to Christmas Day, in which we fast and pray in order to commemorate the day our savior Jesus Christ was born. It is strongly encouraged for all youth to participate in preparation towards the remembrance of the birth of Christ .

This period, before the 25th of December, is called the Advent. In Latin, the word Advent means "the coming." Starting Wednesday, the 15th of December, the Holy Church will start the Holy Advent Fast (Yeldho Noumbu). Yes, yet again, another LENT. Thus, this period of fasting is a preparation in connection with the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

2,000 years ago, the angels appeared to those Shepards in the field who were watching after their flock and said "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will for all the people. Todayin the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. " Luke 2:8-11. From then on to this very day, we are still celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior. The message of Christmas is not only to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, but as baptized Orthodox Christians, to celebrate his birth in each of our hearts. By observing this Advent Lent, we are preparing our hearts for our Lord to dwell in and ignite within it the fire of love, peace, and happiness. By partaking in this holy period of lent, we are also preparing ourselves for the Second Advent, which will be his second coming, when he will bring peace and justice to the world and give us hope for an eternal life with the Holy father.

As we approach Christmas day, let us try to observe this period of advent fasting, along with buying gifts and getting ready for that big Christmas party at your house. It is important whatever we do, to keep CHRIST in CHRISTmas. Don't be misled by the temptations of this world, but overcome them by preparing for and celebrating the true meaning of Christmas. Let us all, together, take this time to come in unity, true Christian spirit, and welcome Christ into our lives.

May the joy and peace of that first Christmas be with us and let's pray that his presence may change us into faithful Orthodox Children of God. I wish you all a blessed and early Merry Christmas.

For Saturday, the plan is to travel NE Philadelphia (like 5 houses), and then head to south to Upper Darby, and finish up in Delaware and it is asked that all attending arrive at the church prior to 2:00pm.

I hope everyone can come out and have fun. In addition, while I don't think I need to say this, be dressed warmly and try to avoid carrying too many things with you.

Dear SPYC,

I wanted to appreciate everyone for a great job in organizing such an event. You all made me very proud not because you pulled out a victory but because you all banded together, practiced consistently and welcome the St. Paul's kids to our church to break bread and share in fellowship. Although it is nice to win and definitely enjoy it, please do so graciously. Speaking with Justin and Roy, it was just amazing seeing you guys laying it out on the field but still shaking hands at the end. It was a great moment.

Once again, keep up the good work, I look forward to the elections tomorrow. Please think about how we can continue to bring more people into the fold and have them walk with Christ.

First I like to give congrats to all the individuals who participated within the SPYC-SPYRT Unity Bowl today. As you probably saw on Facebook, we won. And while all guys who came to play deserve credit, I like to give appreciation to the Sport Manager Jenson George as well as Danny George from St. Paul for leading the event, in coordinating, and preparing this event. Illegal Equipment:

A. Headwear containing any hard, unyielding, stiff material, including billed hats, or items with exposed knots.
B. Jewelry.
C. Pads or braces worn above the waist.
D. Shoes with metal, sharp edges, or spikes. Football/Soccer cleats are recommended, sneakers are fine too.
E. Shirts or jerseys that do not remain tucked in.
F. Pants or shorts with any belt(s), belt loop(s), or exposed drawstring(s), preferably without large pockets.
G. Leg and knee braces made of hard, unyielding material, unless covered on both sides and all edges overlapped.
H. Exposed metal on clothes or person.
I. Towels attached at the player's waist.

NUMBER OF PLAYERS: Each team should start the game with 8 players (7 boys maximum); a minimum of 7 is needed to avoid a forfeit.

LENGTH OF GAME: Playing time shall be 80 minutes, separated into two halves of 40 minutes. The clock will be running the entire time. Half time will be 30 minutes. A coin toss determines who starts with possession and picks which side. In the case of overtime, there will be coin toss for possession and the first point wins.

KICK-OFFS/PUNTING: Kick offs can be thrown, punted or actually kicked off from behind the 1 yard line. If the ball goes out of bound the receiving team starts at their own 20. Touchbacks start at the 10.

LINE OF SCRIMMAGE: The offensive team must have a minimum of 5 players set the line of scrimmage at the snap. Players in motion do not count as players on the line of scrimmage. Once the center has placed his hands on the ball no offensive player may enter the neutral zone. Following the ready for play whistle and until a legal snap, no defensive player may encroach, touch the ball, stand in, or in any other way interfere with the offensive team.

SCORING: Upon scoring a touchdown a team gets 6 points, and is given 3 choices for scoring an extra 1,2 or 3 points. If a girl scores the touchdown then 9 points are awarded with no extra point opportunities.

Touchdowns = 6 points, 9 if scored by a girl with no extra point opportunities

Extra Points = 1 point if successful from the 3 yard line

Extra Points = 2 points if successful from the 10 yard line

Extra Points = 3 points if successful from the 20 yard line

SUBSTITUTIONS: Substations can be made between plays but not during

PLAY CLOCK: 30 seconds, you can substitute between downs, but anything after 30 seconds is Delay of game.

FLAG BELTS:

All shirts must be tucked in, and are not permitted to hang over the flag belt. If a player's belt falls off while running, he will be downed by 2 hand touch. Flags must be positioned around the waist with a flag on each side and one on the back.

No flag guarding, offenders will be downed at the occurrence. This includes but is not limited to:

· Swinging the hand or arm over the flag belt to prevent an opponent from deflagging.

· Placing the ball in possession over the flag belt to prevent an opponent from deflagging.

· Lowering the shoulders in such a manner that flag guards.

OFFICIAL'S AUTHORITY: The referees have final say on all calls throughout the game. They can discuss with each other what happened but players have no say. Don't argue with the officials or other players about a call. No challenges.

PENALTIES:

Charging – 5 yard penalty from start of play, loss of down

Encroachment – 5 yard penalty

False Start - 5 yard penalty

Offsides – 5 yard penalty

Holding – 5 yard penalty, automatic first down

(Offensive – 10 yard penalty)

Pass Interference – 5 yard penalty, automatic First down

(Offensive – 5 yard penalty, loss of down)

Roughing the Passer – 5 yard penalty, automatic first down

Intentional Grounding – Spot of foul, loss of down

Delay of Game – 5 yard penalty

PERSONAL FOULS: Any act listed below or any other act of unnecessary roughness is a personal foul. Players shall not :

· Punch, strike, or attempt to steal the ball from a player in possession.

· Trip an opponent.

· Contact an opponent who is on the ground.

· Throw the runner to the ground.

· Hurdle another player.

· Contact an opponent either before or after the ball is declared dead.

· Make any contact with an opponent that is deemed unnecessary.

· Deliberately drive or run into a defensive player.

· Clip an opponent.

· Position themselves on the shoulders of a teammate or opponent to gain an advantage.

· Tackle the runner. (Warrants ejection)

· Stiff-Arming

· Stripping the ball IS legal, but any personal contact or roughing will be a foul

Hey Everyone

First, I like to thank all of the individuals who helped to make the Thanksgiving Lunch a big success last Sunday, November 21th, 2010 whether you made cornbread, let us use your oven, helped with the preparations, made your parents/relatives helped out, sponsored this event, or help consume the food. The food was delicious and it seemed everyone was able to enjoy themselves during the preparations. Also I hope everyone enjoys their thanksgiving holidays.

As many of you are aware, on Saturday, November 27th, 2010, we will have a thanksgiving (flag) football game with St. Paul and there will be a trophy for the victor. So before the big game, we will have practice, this Friday, November 26th, 2010 at around 10:00 at the church, though we may go to close by park to practice. It is encouraged for all youth to come out, and it is suggested to bring cleats (if you have a pair), and a bottle of water.

The SPYC-SPRYT Unity Football game is on this Saturday, November 27th, 2010 and we plan to start at 10:00am. Please remember that this is a flag football event and if you planning on coming out to play or support, do wear a red shirt as our team color is red. The location will be the upper field at Loseche Elementary School, about a 5 minute drive from church. Please come and give your support. So everyone, make some free time for this and help us win the trophy and I suppose we can show off and all that.

Next Sunday, November 28th, 2010 we will be having our youth election as well as our youth group photo after the Holy Qurbana, so be sure to attend.

Thanksgiving Meal Preperations

Hey, Everyone

This Sunday, SPYC will be having our 4^th Annual Thanksgiving Meal, but as you all know turkeys don't grow on trees and we'll have to prepare the food ahead of time.

Preparation for the meal will start at 9am on Saturday in the church parsonage and will go on until we're done. If you got time, even if it an hour, do come out and lend a helping hand. Bring anything you think will liven up things down at the church when we go through the standby phases and all. (i.e. games, music, movies)

Please attend this event, and help us make this year's meal another SPYC success. Please let me know if you have any questions. (For those doing cornbread, I will send a message regarding the details and all, later today.)

On Sunday, November 7th, 2010, we mentioned in the General Youth Meeting that we need to submit the names of the 2011 E-Board members to the church prior to the General Body Meeting on Sunday, December 5, 2010. As a result we will have the election on Sunday, November 28th, 2010 after Holy Qurbana. For both the Secretary and Treasurer positions, there will be a main operative and then a co-operate (where the co-operate will assist and learn under the main) and the election for Committee Representatives will be decided in the General Body Meeting by the adults. As many of you are aware, on Saturday, November 27th, 2010, we will have a thanksgiving (flag) football game with St. Paul and there will be a trophy for the victor. Like the previous two Saturday, we will have practice, this Saturday, November 6th, 2010 at around 2:30pm not 3:30 at the church, though we may go to close by park to practice. It is encouraged for all youth to come out, and it is suggested to bring cleats (if you have a pair), and a bottle of water.

On Sunday, November 21, 2010, SPYC will be having our 4th Annual Thanksgiving Meal, but as you all know turkeys don't grow on trees and we'll have to prepare the food ahead of time. This Saturday, we will be obtaining the turkeys and will be storing them at house of people who volunteered their oven. I send emails out to the specific people later about what going on.

Yesterday, I sent out a email form regarding the Christmas Caroling so let me expound on it a little. This form is just for me to get an estimate of how many youth are coming out for caroling from house to house so we know if we need to get another vehicle for the youth. Since this seems to be an important question, I will give a rough guide for the travel area of each day, however don't expect them to be that exact, wait until the official copy is posted on the church bullet board to be sure. On the 10th, we be going to North Phila, and then go to Harrisburg. On the 11th, we be going to NE Phila (very little), Upper Darby, and Delaware. On the 17th, we be going to be generally in NE Phila area all night and on the 18th, we be going to finish NE Phila and then go to the suburban areas around NE Phila. This list of things to do is for myself and all my dear good friends at church, thanks a million for sharing all the responsibilities......Feel free to reply back with any suggestions, concerns and questions…

We are expecting around 200 people.

Housekeeping Committee: Housekeeping to make sure the supplies in Kitchen, Serving area and bathroom are adequate and provide alerts if necessary. Also please arrange people who can make coffee, serve breakfast, lunch and evening snacks

Housekeeping needs to make sure we have ample supplies of Bath room tissue, Coffee powder, sugar, Serving Utensils, Napkins, Kanji Plates, lunch napkins, Whole Milk, Water, Tea cups, Table top covers

Paper towels. Please purchase milk the day before.

Also please make sure the church is cleaned.

We need to gently remind our guests not to put paper towels or any rough stuff in the toilet bowl and flush. We often have blocks in our sewage/septic pipes. So this should be avoided. Only bathroom tissue should be flushed in the toilets. We may tell the MC to announce this as well.

Purchasing/Finance Committee:- Sabu Jacob, Aleyas T P, Kunjumol Rajan, Sunitha Flowerhill and anyone who make purchases for this event - please make sure the receipts are ready to be presented to the ecumenical committee (Suma Chacko). We will be reimbursed for our church supplies expenses.

Remaining ladies can be seated on the floor. Need to move the rest of the chairs away from the field of camera. You are welcomed to bring your own cameras as well.

Regional Competition

Dear all,

Thank you all for your great support, hard work, and dedication, in the competition. There was some drama in St. Paul's towards the end of the competition, regarding the scoring. I saw somebody taking the list to the stage with our Church as the Champions again, but later on there were some quiet discussions between the director, and some members of St. Paul's, and they took some of our points off and made us lose the Championship by one point. I was not hoping for a championship from the beginning and I am not disappointed for not winning, but I am disappointed of the way that they stole it from our kids. We caught some of the "mistakes" entered in the computer and tried to correct them. Thank God I have some witnesses regarding this. If we get little more support from our idle students/teachers/parents they may not be able to steal the championship. Since they "don't have enough time" for printing certificates, no certificated were distributed there. They announced that they will mail it. I will give the list of the winners from our church soon.

Again thank you for your great support, and congratulations to all the participants from our church. You all did an outstanding job! God Bless You All!

Hello everyone

Regional competitions are next Saturday (September 11, 2010) at St. Paul's Syrian Orthodox Church.

The competition starts at 9:00 AM. We will be leaving from our church at 8:00 AM. Those who are interested in leaving from our church are requested to come to our church before 8:00 AM on the day of the competition. If any participating students need a ride, contact me ASAP. The registration fee for participating students is $10.00, but I am going to pay all the registration together, so anyone who is coming straight to St. Paul's is requested to see me for their registration IDs.

We also need some judges to represent our church, during the competitions. Anybody (Youth or Adult) interested should give your names to me soon. The list of children participating is also attached to this along with the directions and they are also placed on the bulletin board. If anybody wants to add or change names or items, please contact me before Sunday (September 5, 2010).

The judges' scoring sheet samples are also attached. Look that to see how the judge's are scoring the participants for different items.

Regular Sunday School classes will resume on September 12, 2010. All teachers and students are requested to come to church by 8:45 AM
